Gary McDonald
Gary has served as Business Editor of The Irish News since January 2000, bringing more than four decades of journalism experience to the role. His career began in 1979 as a trainee reporter with his hometown paper, the Banbridge Chronicle, before moving to the Ulster Star in Lisburn in 1986.
He went on to become editor of the Mid-Ulster Mail in Cookstown, leading the paper from 1989 to 1996. From there, he took up the editorship of Ulster Business magazine, shaping its coverage of Northern Ireland’s commercial and economic landscape for nearly four years. After a brief period working in PR, Gary joined the Press Association as Ireland sub-editor, before ultimately moving to The Irish News.
Currently editor of the Ulster-Scots Newspaper, Gary has been widely recognised for his contribution to business journalism. The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) named him Northern Ireland’s Business Journalist of the Year four times (2000, 2006, 2009 and 2010). He also won the Northern Ireland category in the UCD Smurfit School Irish Business Journalist Awards in both 2008 and 2009.
Gary has been with us since the beginning or our journey in 2024 and returns this year to bring his high quality professionalism and quick fire questioning to our day.
